Donuts with Abby!

11th January 2017

My sweet girl could eat a donut a day if let her, I’m so serious. When I asked her what theme she’d like for her 6th birthday she said she just wanted to eat donuts and wear a pencil skirt (random I know). So we decided on a donut themed party, but now I had to find a cute pencil skirt for her to wear!

This year since my girl was in Kinder and had a good size group of close friends of her own, I decided to keep her party very small. I also wanted to keep the girls entertained with something they enjoy doing and what little girl doesn’t enjoy making crafts! I found the most adorable scented squishy donut charms on Etsy, I got them so the girls could make their own donut necklaces! My friends over at Happily Ever Etched host workshops in their store, they were so gracious to let me host this craft workshop for my birthday girl and her small group of girlfriends there.

For the invitation, I wanted something cute and simple. I reached out to Colleen Michelle Design on Etsy, because she had the perfect donut invitation printable! Printables are the way to go for me, my hubby is a printer so it’s a no brainer and seriously the most cost effective for printing party invitations. I placed them in glassine envelopes and tied them with sprinkle yarn for my little sweetie to hand deliver at school.

Guest tables were adorned with simple paper runners that I hand stamped with sprinkle shapes I carved out of potatoes. We placed cute donut paper plates with matching cups from Oh Happy Day and a party hat at each place setting. I also plated naked cake donuts made by The French Confection Co. on pretty milk glass pedestals and vintage domes from my collection of rentals, so that the girls could decorate their own donuts.

For the table centerpieces, I asked my good friends from Cerritos Florist to design some whimsical, soft pastel floral arrangements to go along with these donut vases I hand painted. I wanted to accent them with cute milk jars I found at Michaels. While I knew I wanted to put flowers in them, I thought it would be pretty awesome to fill the milk jars with actual milk instead of water. A part of me thought it was a genius idea but then the thought of flowers in milk seemed weird to me. I worried they would wilt and turn brown. I had never seen it done before. So I had to ask my florists friends and they thought it was a cute idea! They also figured out a genius way to make sure the flowers stayed looking fresh. I’m so glad we went for it because they turned out super, duper adorable!

The dessert table was seriously a donut wonderland. We served my girls favorite donuts from Krispy Kreme. The French Confection Co. whipped up a gorgeous drip cake topped with donut macarons, mini donut topped cupcakes, and donut iced sugar cookies. She also made the cutest tiny donut sprinkles to adorn the cake and other desserts on the table. The donut shaped cake pops from Bella Bakery were the cutest! We also served little brigadeiros, from Simply Brigadeiro, in donut shapes and traditional ones topped with donut and bow sprinkles.

The décor and design of the dessert table was pretty fun to put together. I wanted to use a round table, instead of the traditional rectangle table, so that it could look more like a donut! I rented a vanilla cake colored linen from Create-a-Party Rentals and handmade a table topper to look like the pink icing with sprinkles. The topper was made out of pink felt fabric. I cut a circle shape, trimmed the edges and cut out a hole in the center. Lastly, I made sprinkle stamps out of potatoes and stamped the topper with different color paint. It came out super adorable! For the backdrop, I made a big fringe donut out of tissue paper and cardboard and got a laser cut sign custom made by Happily Ever Etched. They also made matching cake toppers and picks for my desserts to tie it all in! I strung a garland of paper donuts from Party Hearty Shop along with the super festive and pretty fringe tissue garlands from PaperFox LA. I was super loving their dip dyed garland!

Guests took home donut favor bags along with scented donut soaps from Soapopotomus (I had to keep those separate from the favor bags because they looked so much like chocolates!). They got to fill up their own to-go treat boxes I found on Oriental Trading, with all their favorite goodies from the dessert table to enjoy at home.

Birthday girl wore a pretty pink leotard with the pencil skirt she so wanted. I couldn’t find any in stores so I ended up making it for her. I found the cutest donut print fabric on Spoonflower and ordered a yard. When I got to making it, I decided to add a peplum ruffle to it. We topped off her birthday outfit with donut Minnie ears I made from Parlor of Pretties. She wore an amazing handmade donut necklace customized with her name from Andisa Charms.

My sweet girl had a blast on her birthday with her closest friends doing what she loves the most, eating donuts and wearing a pencil skirt!
